Where does Orlando Drinking Water Come From?
The Orange County Utilities Department annual drinking water report states that well pumps at Orange County’s water supply facilities draw water from a natural underground reservoir called the Floridan Aquifer. After the sulfide is removed, it is treated with chlorine, fluoride is added, and the water is pumped to a finished water tank, awaiting distribution to residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
Groundwater from the Floridan Aquifer is of consistently high quality. The groundwater from this aquifer is primarily fed by rainwater that is filtered through hundreds of feet of sand and rock in a natural filtering process.
According to the Environmental Working Group, Orlando, home to over 500,000 residents and a travel destination for millions, received a low rating of 81 in tap water quality. This study included 100 cities and listed the cities in order of descending quality.
The low rating was due to the presence of 17 chemicals in the tap water, seven of which could pose health hazards.
Common contaminants that may be present in the source water include:
- Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria that may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, and wildlife.
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts, metals, storm water runoff, and industrial wastewater discharges.
- Pesticides and herbicides.
- Organic chemical contaminants, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production from gas stations.
- Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.
The Environmental Protection Agency requires all public water suppliers to routinely monitor for contaminants in the drinking water according to federal and state laws.
