Conserving Water-What You Need to Know

A side view of sloshing water

In Central Florida water conservation has become an important issue. 92% of Florida’s population depends on groundwater for drinking water. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you are doing your part in conserving water as a daily practice. Conserving water brings savings benefits and helps to prevent water pollution.

Follow these simple steps to help positively impact the community you live in:

  • Fix your leaks. Even small leaks can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day. Be sure you or a plumber check for faucet, pipe, and toilet leaks.
  • Turn off the water while washing your hands; this can save you a few gallons of water.
  • When washing dishes, fill up your sink with water instead of letting it run the whole time you’re cleaning the dishes.
  • Decrease your lawn size and replace it with landscaping that thrives in drought conditions. Succulents are great examples.
  • In Orange County, watering is limited to two days a week from March 13, 2016- November 6, 2016. To find out your watering days, visit the Orange County Utilities Water Division.
  • If you’re planting new sod or landscaping in Orange County you are allowed to water it on any day at any time for the initial 30 days after installation, then every other day for the next 30 days.
  • Raise the lawn mower blade to its highest level. A higher cut allows the soil to hold in more moisture, requiring less watering.
  • Wash your dog outside. This way you can water the lawn and clean your dog at the same time.
  • Install faucet aerators and low flow showerheads. A showerhead is low flow if it uses less than 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
  • Cut down shower time. 40 gallons of water can be used just from taking a 4-minute shower.

Conserving water doesn’t have to be a chore. Just a couple of easy changes can have you on your way to savings and a better environment. For more plumbing information don’t hesitate to contact Michael’s Plumbing.
